Owls Roost Outfitters is owned and operated by Rick Estes of Ossipee, NH, a native Granite Stater born and raised in the Lakes Region of New Hampshire. He has had a life long passion for fishing first taught to him by his mother. Having been brought up in Wolfeboro and being exposed to world famous fly tiers like Jim Warner and Lefty Harris, the art of fly tying and the use of the New England streamer has been a spring board for his interest in fly fishing
Rick spent 28 years with the NH Fish and Game Department as a Game Warden but before his retirement in 2002, he started to build a small fly fishing guide's business in both Maine and New Hampshire. He spent his entire career in the Lakes Region and the White Mountains of New Hampshire and retired as a supervisor. His career has taken him to every nook and cranny of the Lakes Region as well as the White Mountains. He has fine tuned his wilderness skills not only in fishing but in wilderness navigation and survival. Because of his standing with the search and rescue community, he was named NH Fish and Game team leader for the specialized search and rescue team and was instrumental in bringing GPS into the search and rescue business of NH.
Rick's love affair with the Moosehead Lakes Region started in 1992 when he and his wife Pat bought into a camp in the North Maine Woods. He spent many years with his young family exploring the wilderness of Maine, finding remote fishing ponds and exploring the big rivers which that area has to offer. This exploration laid an excellent foundation for guiding fisherman in the "Big Woods" of Maine.
Rick started fly tying at an early age growing up in Wolfeboro and has been fly tying in earnest for the past 35 years. He now teaches a class or two a year with his fly tying partner Ellis Hatch where they tie everything from pupae to dries and everywhere in between.
Rick is a licensed fishing guide in the state of NH and a registered guide in the state of Maine for fishing and recreation and holds an outfitter/guide special use permit in the White MountainNational Forest. He is certified in CPR and First Aid as per the requirements of both Maine and New Hampshire. Rick holds honorary membership in the Mountain Rescue Service.
Rick is also a licensed commercial boat operator in both New Hampshire and Maine. His life has immersed him into learning, observing, and understanding the natural ways of the woods and waters of Maine and New Hampshire. He has been labeled as a traditionalist amongst his peers, but it is his feeling that "…for some folks it's not the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, but the adventure it took to find it".
