About Us

Rick-Estes-450x675Owls Roost Outfitters is owned and operated by Rick Estes of Ossipee, N.H., a native of the Granite State, born and raised in the Lakes Region. His life-long passion for fishing was first taught to him by his mother and later influenced by world famous fly tyers like Jim Warner, Lefty Harris and Ellis Hatch. It all started in his hometown of Wolfeboro, NH. Rick started tying flies at an early age and has been doing so in earnest for over 40 years. He now offers clinics, where he ties everything from pupae to dries and everywhere in between.

Rick spent 28 years with the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department as a game warden, a career that took him to every nook and cranny of the Lakes Region and the White Mountains. He fine-tuned his wilderness skills not only in fishing but also in wilderness navigation and survival during his tenure. Because of his work in the search and rescue community, Rick was named N.H. Fish and Game team leader for the state’s specialized search and rescue team, and he was instrumental in implementing GPS technology into search and rescue operations.

Beginning in 1992, Rick’s passion for the outdoors extended to the great state of Maine where he and his wife, Pat, bought a camp. As a result, Rick has spent many years with his family exploring Maine’s wilderness, finding remote fishing ponds and navigating the big rivers that the state has to offer. This exploration has laid an excellent foundation for guiding fishermen into the “Big Woods” of Maine.

A licensed fishing guide in New Hampshire and a Registered Maine Guide for fishing and recreation, Rick also holds a license for commercial boat operation in the states where he guides. In addition, Rick is certified in CPR and wilderness first aid and holds an honorary membership in the Mountain Rescue Service, a volunteer search and rescue organization based in North Conway, N.H. Rick is the head fishing guide at Bosebuck Mountain Camps located in the remote unspoiled wilderness of Maine’s western mountains at the northern end of Aziscohos Lake.

He has been labeled as a traditionalist amongst his peers, but it is Rick’s feeling that, "…for some folks it's not the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, but the adventure it took to find it.”

“Fishing with Rick Estes is more than a day of fishing; it’s a rewarding experience. Every time I’ve gone on a trip with Rick, I’ve come off the river a better fly fisherman. His knowledge of fly fishing is extensive, and he loves to share it with you.

From fly casting to learning how to read the water and where the fish are, Rick’s a great teacher.

Owls Roost Outfitters is not the usual 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. guide service that I’ve experienced before, here and out west. It’s a personal service. Rick provides a full day on the water (you have to tell him when its time to quit), a great shore lunch, and all the free flies that you can lose.

I’ve fished with Rick on waters in New Hampshire and Maine, and each time was a great experience, lots of fun, and great fishing.”
