There is something about a true canvas/wood canoe that is warm and inviting. Our 20-foot Norwest freighter is beautifully crafted and equipped with an eight-horse, four-stroke Johnson motor—a quiet and clean running engine that makes an early morning troll very enjoyable.

Two fishermen can easily stand up and cast in this extremely rugged and stable craft, hooking landlocked salmon, togue, and rainbow trout that are often 16” to 20” long, plucked from the big lakes of New Hampshire and Maine. In the Moosehead and Rangeley Lakes Regions of Maine, for example, the canoe is truly king, and endless options are available for netting large salmon and brook trout on some of the most picturesque and wild stretches of water in New England.

We also use the 20-footer to go after large and small mouth bass with fly rods on Maine and New Hampshire’s many lakes and ponds when the states’ rivers get too warm for good trout fishing. But in the fall, we turn our attention back to the trout, which have grown fat and sassy; their spawning colors rival the foliage along the shores where we fish, oftentimes, well into October and early November.
